Pricing

Charges vary depending on which service(s) you require and in what combination, however a guide to individual services is as follows. We have broken them down into rough categories, but obviously it depends a lot on the type and scale of the job, and if and what we need to hire in.

TV/Film/Video

To hire myself with no equipment is £25/hr, with a minimum charge of £100 inside the M25, and £125 outside M25. A daily buyout fee of £250 can be arranged for certain types of work.

Deals can be done for those on lower budgets as I own a lot of kit myself so please do enquire.

Kit

Kit prices are based on what many describe as the ndustry standard, which is whatever RFS charge for the equivalent kit.

See the RFS price list here

Travel costs

£1/mile petrol charge applies outside M25 area.

Music

Please note - this is not the rates for festival recording - please contact me for festival details. Festival pricing varies for each event.

Stereo

£100 / £120

When recording live music on location with the portable stereo recorders there is a set fee, plus hire charges for any additional equipment needed and post production costs if required. The basic charge will include 2 Tascam HD-P2 recorders. This will allow a stereo feed from the desk, plus a stereo mic for crowd and FOH recording.

If you book us to record your band exclusively at a venue or any other location the fee is £100 for London and £120 for outside the M25 area, with travel costs charged at £1 per mile thereafter. There are discounts available if recording several bands at the same gig.

NB- this is based on a maximum location time of 4 hours, so if sound check is a long time before the gig starts we may have to charge more.

Stereo microphone

For this type of work we will generally use a Sanken CMS9 microphone.

Home recording

I can also do home visits. I bring the stereo recorders and appropriate microphones, and even some sound damping panels and bass traps etc, and record your music in your house. This is particularly suited to musicians who cannot easily transport their instruments to our studio. The minimum fee for this is £100 (for up to 4 hours recording time) within the M25 £120 for outside M25 (plus travel and parking costs) for the raw recording, plus the choice of post production options charge if needed (see below).

In this case i will generally use the Sennheiser MKH800 mic(s) if appropriate, unless you require another specific mic, which we can hired in.

Mobile multi-track recording

Software

We now use Pro Tools LE and HD systems, depending on the number of channels required and the resolution needed.

Pro Tools LE, combined with the Focusrite Platinum Octorpe, will allow up to 12 mics, or 14 including tyhe ambinet mics if required, via the i88x mic pres.

If you require More channels or higher than 96kHz resolution, then we use Pro Tools HD.

16 input - £400

24 input - £500

48 input - £600

Hardware

For live bands we will generally use the Fostex D2424LV or the Alesis HD24, 24 track digital recorders. The choice will depend on the type of work and location, as each has pros and cons.

There are various options with hardware from a basic package costing £250, up to the full package with mic splitters and mic pres. POA

Post Production

Generally the price of a job will include the supply of a raw recording only, either by download or on a CD/DVD.

The recording can be supplied with a Fade-In and Fade-Out if requested, and normalized at no extra charge.

If however you require us to produce a final version music CD for you then you must specify a 'production choice'. There are 3 levels of production, basic, standard and expert. Clinets are welcome to join me in the studio for this part of the production process if they feel they would like to be part of it and give their opinion as we process things.

Studio time is basically £20 an hour. the more hours you pay for, the better the results, but a rough guide to what you get is as follows. For the expert service I also use some more exotic processing which yields better results.

Outboard gear can always be brought in if you are looking for a particular sound.

Basic - £50

This will include basic overall compression and EQ processing, and as much tweeking as possible with a 2.5 hour time limit and costs £50. This level is adequate for demo CDs and critical listening of your own material.

Standard - £80

The entire recording is compressed and equalised, together with any other processing that is appropriate for the job. More attention is given to the process, and any irregularities are ironed out. This will be around 4 hours and is tailored towards people who want better results, for CDs they intend to sell or sendf to record companies. This will cost £80.

Expert - Variable but £100-200 usually

I basically do the same as above, but a lot more attention is paid to the detail. Each track is processed individually, and individual excessive peaks are 'smoothed' prior to compression. We also analyse and apply a final light compression and EQ to the entire mix ensuring the recording is well balanced. In certain types of recordings we may process with specialist plug ins to 'warm' the sound, or taylor it in some other way for specific uses. The end result is a well produced CD that is of a sufficient quality to sell commercially or use for professioanl marketing. This service can vary considerably in time depending on the type of material and the use for which it is intended, so prices witll vary.

PA / Monitoring Facilities

The PA is available in several different combinations. LA only undertakes manned jobs, by which I mean i will bring the system to you, set it up, run the event, and take it away. That is why our charges are higher than you might expect to find with a dry hire company.

Stereo Pair - 2 full range 15" Renkus Heinz speakers/monitors totalling 1200 watts* supplied with stands and amp rack** - £300

Stereo Pair with Sub - priced as above but with a 1400 watt* sub bass unit - +£30

Low profile wedge monitor - +£10

A choice of any of our mixers (plus multicore) can be included for an extra charge of £30

*rating quoted is 'program', which equates to twice the RMS figure. The main speakers are capable of 127db program @500Hz / 126dbProgram @2500Hz. The sub speaker is capable of 130db program.

Prices include all relevant accessories as below:

** comprises 2x MC2 T2000 apmlifiers, and one T500 amplifier for the monitor.

Cables - Chord Odysey speaker cable is used if within 5m of the amp rack, otherwise for longer runs, Oelback Silver Plated 2.5mm core and 4mm core are used for the main and sub respectively. We now use mostly Chord company Chameleon Silver Plus mic cables and interconnects, and Cream instrument cables.

Crossover - an XTA DP226 is used as limiter/crossover/EQ.
